I keep several of these on hand since I prefer hand-held openers over electric ones. I find these work better than the fancier versions of hand-held openers with those large padded handles. These have never failed me but eventually will wear out after years of use. I also read it's best not to submerge them in water (unless absolutely necessary) but to just wipe with a damp cloth or run under warm water and pat dry. Doing this I believe has helped me to get many years of good service from each one.
