The volume goes as loud as you probably want it to. (I had to crank it up when it started to thunder one day.) When you turn it off, it will remember where you stopped. If you know a chapter you would like to hear, there is also a handy code on the back that you can just type in. The reader is very enjoyable to hear, and makes the stories come alive.
