Our son is 4 and grandma got these for him. Mostly he enjoyed watching us smash them with a hammer. They were very nice!
We tried both the sock method and used a flat-head screwdriver and a hammer to help crack them open. Stones that feel heavier will be much more solid than those that aren't and I recommend having a gentle yet firm hit. Some cracked open with the first hit while others (that were more solid) took awhile.
Learning about the different types and how they formed was interesting. Kids will definitely need help to open them without smashing them to bits or injuring themselves, there is definitely an art to it.
