I bought this for my sons 9th birthday. The kids loves rocks. Comes home with them in his pocket from achool and always has had a creative imagination when it comes to a story behind it. With this he loves actually breaking the rock open for the surprise of what was going to be inside. He loves it. Now I need to buy a shelf to hold them all.

I bought two boxes of the Nat Geo Break Open 10 Premium Geodes. They are exactly as expected and are similar to the ones I've seen for sale at science museum gift shops, but with more variety. These will be given as part my 8-yr old's birthday party favors along with a printed insert about geodes and instructions (better than candy and junk toys, I think). The instructions inside are clear and printed nicely with color pictures. There is a good mix of geodes with different colors, shapes, and sizes so they all don't appear to be from the same place. For the most part they each feel fairly light, 3 of the largest ones of the total 20 feel heavy/solid, one was already broken but that's OK since I got to see the crystals inside. Geodes should feel light since ideally they're hollow inside. The solid ones might have pretty striations but are hard to break open. I weighed one set and it was about 2.2 lbs. I've also included pictures of the box, the packaging, both sets where one includes a ruler to give you an idea of their sizes. The sizes in both boxes are similar. I also included pics of the broken geode before and after washing. I'd definitely buy it again.

I bought this as a gift for my nephews 10th birthday. He is so excited to start hammering open the rocks to see what is inside. His excitement was just contagious. Does not include hammer. I hope it is an ongoing inspiration to science.

Absolutely blown away by the quality of these. I know that geodes are hit or miss because you can't predict what is inside of them, but the quality of all of these was so great that I'm going to order another kit.

We tried both the sock method and used a flat-head screwdriver and a hammer to help crack them open. Stones that feel heavier will be much more solid than those that aren't and I recommend having a gentle yet firm hit. Some cracked open with the first hit while others (that were more solid) took awhile.

Learning about the different types and how they formed was interesting. Kids will definitely need help to open them without smashing them to bits or injuring themselves, there is definitely an art to it.
