We did the second maneuver, but if you have a hard surface in the back of the seat, you can perform the seat belt maneuver. Unlike other products, this setup makes this chair very sturdy and stable.

This feature won't be too helpful if the back of your chair doesn't have felt or fabric as the Velcro won't have anything to attach to, but still being able to slide that tab between the seats will keep it somewhat in place.
