Basically, you start at the bottom and build it up. 3 of the pegs' screws are longer than the other 2, so those 3 are meant for the bottom 3 holes. I think most of the people who had a hard time with assembly didn't notice this detail. I put it together very quickly without any tools. We have it for dress up clothes and it looks adorable. I might use it for Christmas stockings, too, like other reviewers have mentioned.
