How in the world can he fix this (the large opening allows in bitter cold air and I'm afraid a creepy mouse might perhaps come through it!) I saw this gadget and think it will definitely make the job easy now (no excuses) to create a template around the pipes, cut out a thin piece of wood and close up that large opening.
