Using it was even more of a pleasure.    i am very happy with this No 4. perfectly flat sole, solidly built. adjustable mouth is a very nice feature. note it has a Norris-style adjustment - to me this is not a put-off but i know some won't like it. be sure to scrape/sand off the varnish from the totes and coat with your oil of choice (BLO in my case) for added comfort. the front tote did come loose with time, but this is easy enough to fix.

I bought this brush because of the good comments, it's totally flat, the sides are at 90 degrees, the parts are perfect, you only need a very fine sandpaper in the corners to polish them. I tried brushing chestnut wood as well as the blade, very Fine. A finer sharpening and it will be perfect, the regulation system is a bit difficult for me to adapt to, a matter of using it a bit.    New amateur in woodworking, in preparation for my retirement, I was surprised by the mass of the machine, even if others had already mentioned it. A beautiful object, made to last. The sole is very flat but only one side is perfectly square. If one day I have to recalibrate, I will take the good side. But that's not the first use I'll make of it. Perfectly usable out of the box. On the other hand I wanted to buy an iron to have 2 different uses, not found where to get one!

   I'm a weekend handyman and amateur woodworker, so I wasn't sure if I'd notice the difference in quality from a relatively expensive tool like this, but I have to say I was very impressed. The plate of the plane is as flat as flat can be, adjustments you can make are very useful, and there's essentially no play in the fittings, so once it's set up right then it stays that way. And, I have to say, it is a thing of beauty! I have a few woodworking tools inherited from my grandfather that just fit your hand perfectly and also look gorgeous, and when I look at this I know that I'll be passing this down the generations as well.

   My tool supply is a smorgasbord from various manufacturers. I purchase tools based on economical considerations as well as purposes. If I was a professional cabinet maker, I'd have those really “high dollar” planes but I simply don't work with them every day. This plane is a #4 SMOOTHING plane. You should be able to hold a shaving up to a light, put your finger on the back and see the finger's shadow at least. This plane can be adjusted to where you measure the thickness with a set of calipers! If one needs to remove thicker shavings you need a jointer. This tool is a mid grade example that performs very well and satisfies my concerns!
